Unusual vintage tape emulation to create a low-fi effect
The developers from the studio AudioThing released VST-plugin AudioThing Reels, emulates the sound of a reel film tape recorder. According to the developers, the main feature of the plug-in is that it is based on a Japanese little-known tape recorder purchased by AudioThing at one of the flea markets.


The plugin accurately recreates the sound and sound characteristics of the High Fidelity Model 402 tape recorder. AudioThing claims that the average quality of the tape recorder multiplied by its considerable age makes High Fidelity Model 402 sound very low quality and suitable for creating an analog low-effect.
AudioThing Reels tape recorder emulator lowers the quality of any signal passed through it. Users can choose one of three types of film (Japanese, French, Italian) and the speed of its playback, which will affect the intensity of signal processing. In addition, the plugin has a number of settings that are responsible for the hiss of the film, ducking and other noises, the echo section, as well as a special function “Tape Stop” that simulates a kind of attenuation that occurs when the film is stopped.
