VMware Workstation is a virtualization software designed for x86-64 computers [1] of the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems [1]. Allows the user to install one or more virtual machines on one physical computer and run them in parallel with it. Each virtual machine can run its operating system, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, BSD, and MS-DOS [2]. VMware Workstation is developed and sold by VMware, a division of EMC Corporation.


VMware Workstation supports bridges with the network adapter of a real computer [3], as well as creating shared folders with a virtual machine [4]. The program can mount real CD or DVD disks or ISO images in virtual optical drives, while the virtual machine will consider that the drives are real [5]. Virtual hard disks are stored in .vmdk files [6].

VMware Workstation at any time can save the current state of the virtual machine (snapshot). These snapshots can later be restored, which returns the virtual machine to its saved state [7].
VMware Workstation includes the ability to combine several virtual machines into a group that can be turned on, off, paused or resumed as a single object, which is useful for testing client-server technologies [8].
Also available VMware Player - a similar package of virtualization, but stripped down. This package is free for non-commercial use and is free to distribute.
